TRAINING
We run a number of conferences and seminars each year. A number of them
are presented by visiting teams from our partnering churches, with an
emphasis on equipping and training people (especially leaders) for more
fruitful ministry and practical Christian living.
In addition to this, those of us who are resident trainers and leaders
then focus on mentoring and workshops with an emphasis on personal and
leadership development. We are also assisting in encouraging "health"
and growth in the local churches. In this regard, our practice leans
towards providing "tools rather than imposed solutions from the
outside" and encourages personal and corporate discovery, rather
than the mere transference of information.
We are continually challenged by the expression of our biblical values
and philosophy of ministry in different cultures. We seek to expose
and cut through the destructive and binding aspects of religious subculture.
This necessitates continually grappling with issues understanding paradigms
and where appropriate seeing these shift to a more biblical perspective.
In this regard we recognize that we are on an ongoing journey of discovery
and have a quest for a practical, prophetic and relevant expression
of our faith that is firmly rooted in different contexts.
We believe that Africa must discover its own godly way and solutions
that will produce more indigenous models of church and ministry. We
are sure that these as against imitating the West or First World will
be more effective in the transformation of society that is evidence
of the Kingdom of God breaking through.
KENYA
A leaders' Bible Study group developed into the Karen Church led by
Gerald and Penny Hutton, which became part of the Vineyard in 1996.
At the beginning of 2001, Costa Mitchell, the National Director of AVC
South Africa sent Peter and Judy Twycross to pastor the Karen Vineyard
Church and oversee church planting and leadership development in the
region. Later that year, Wendy Ludovici our worship leader and ethnomusicologist
from the Evanston Vineyard in Chicago returned to Kenya.
There are now a number of Vineyard churches in Nairobi and the vicinity,
two in Mombasa and another on the South Coast. Currently there are clusters
of churches in the Kisumu, Kitale, Muranga and Kisii areas. There are
also churches in Nakuru, Kapsabet, Eldoret, Kakamega, Nanyuki and Bissil.
BURUNDI
After an initial ministry trip by Peter Twycross, Wendy Ludovici and
Mudekereza Nsibula, Peter returned and met with Ananias and Clarette
Munana, who had gathered a group in Bujumbura the capital. This has
since become a growing Vineyard Church with much potential.
SOUTHERN SUDAN
At the end of 2003, Peter Twycross visited Tonge where members of the
Karen Vineyard Church, Sebat and Suzy Kuj work as missionaries. After
a week of teaching and training a number of church leaders, three newly
planted churches have arisen.
Currently we have contacts and opportunities are opening up to plant
churches in Bor on the river Nile and we are looking to God for openings
in Rumbeek.
ETHIOPIA
Through contact with and as a result of a ministry trip in 2004 led
by Ramon Mayo of the Xtreme Vineyard, a church has been planted in Addis
Ababa with a ministry to students at the university.
TANZANIA
In 2002, Peter Twycross asked Tim and Ingrid Briscoe who were concluding
their term as missionaries on Mafia Island to plant a Vineyard church
in Dar es Salaam.
This church has gone from strength to strength in the expatriate community
and became a base for ministry into other parts of the country.
There are now Vineyard churches in Iringa, a cluster of churches in
and around Mbeya as well as another church in Dar Es Salaam and an outreach
on Pemba Island. Japheth a Kenyan pastor from Lunga Lunga is involved

opportunities being pursued, as is the case in Mwanza.

by the visit of a team from a Vineyard in California led by Aaron Searle.
Currently interest is being shown in the North Western part of the country
with the possibility of planting Vineyard churches there. John Willison
from the Evanston Vineyard is now leading the Kampala International
Church.
RWANDA
In 2003 Ananie Bagaragaza, a pastor with churches in the North Western

was followed by others being planted in the city and some villages nearby.
Since then, another church has been planted in Goma which is also impacting
nearby villages. There are contacts and opportunities in Kinshasa as
well as other parts of the country. Byamumgu Bikaya who pastors a church
